Pray. You’d be more successful if you let God in your life. Right? You mean my talent or networking ability have nothing to do with the equation?
I feel I’m being talked down to. Like you are successful strictly because of faith? Warren Buffet is a religious man? Bill Gates is a religious man? Why do things have to be black and white?
The world is run by C students. It’s like. I’m being marginalized.
Don’t you think pagan worshippers talked shit to Christians back in the day? Or Jews talked shit to Christians? Or Muslims talking shit to “infidels”?
Religious people talking shit to people who just are very religious is the same to me.
If I’m starving, it’s because I’m not praying enough? Tithing enough? Hindsight is fucking 20/20. Were you tithing before you were successful or after? I bite my tongue. But it’s draining to deal with religious people talking shit.
I know they’re trying to help but…it’s annoying.
Suicide and Poverty.
I thought about your question of when suicide is acceptable.
I think suicide isn’t acceptable when impoverished. But. Dealing with adversity can be daunting. Family issues. Overcoming life shit.
You don’t have the same networking opportunities as others. Shit is tough.
Not to make excuses. Pull yourself up by the bootstraps. But it’s tiring. Sometimes it’s like…fuck it and end it. But again. It’s Only A Short Period Of Time Of Feeling Down. But it’s like, sometimes it feels the cards are stacked against you.
So. Again, suicide isn’t acceptable but I think suicidal thoughts creep in. It’s like go to school, join student organizations, do internships, have a high GPA, get a job, save money, still party, own a flagship phone, decent car, have your own place, and enjoy life. Ideally in a large metropolitan area. Anything less of this is failure? What age should this be accomplished? It’s like extended family may not be too helpful. Friends help as much as they can. But being successful in America is some shit.
anyone grow up in a good neighborhood but living in the area was really outside your parents income level and there little food, little structure, shitty christmases, and overall so so?
i recognize better schools are in zip codes with a higher social class. but growing up poor in the burbs seems counter productive. i grew up under a myriad of ways one can grow up so i’m not speaking about my own life. just things i’ve seen and continue to see.
then again i feel boys&girls clubs/ymca’s make life better for elementary/middle/high school aged students in urban areas. so the suburbs are a marginal solution. just ‘thinking out loud’ i suppose.
When you grow up in poverty and people/family make “youre a cheap person” jokes, it’s annoying.
I’m sorry there were times I didn’t eat or not have many clothes growing up. Shit. Being fucking poor makes you not want to be poor. And have budgeting skills. There was no silver spoon at all.
It’s just not kosher to me. Like there were times I didn’t have $2 for fucking bus fare. Just bullshit. I feel like the jokes are at the expense of how I grew up. How I grew up in concert with the modern college experience.
I could say “hey, you guys know how I grew up right? And I just graduated so I’m just now beginning the rat race”..student debt, high gas prices, it’s whatever. And it’s not like I don’t ever spend money. I do. Often. Food. Fuel. Shit you have to buy, like hygiene shit. Shit for the car and etc
Don’t call someone cheap when they grew up in deep poverty. It’s survival. If you’re dating someone who can never spend money on a fucking date that’s one thing, but being thrifty is another.
Black privilege is being able to get money easily if you’re in poverty.
It’s harder for non-black people. Now, we have affirmative action, welfare, etc., all catering to black people.
Surely you should be able to link to some statistics proving the Black people benefit the most from welfare and affirmative action.
Surely you should.
Seeing as you’re interested in FACTS, right?
So put your money where your mouth is.
Now you know those stats showing that white women benefit the most from affirmative action & more white people get welfare are anathema to this fool. Next you’ll bring up who welfare was invented to help & really fuck up their whole world by pointing out that black people were excluded from it.
As a Welfare worker I can tell you this is wrong. The majority of the people who come into my job applying for Welfare are white. I speak to at least 20 people a day as a screener, and I see about 2 black families of those twenty. Probably 7 latin@ families. An asian family every other day. The rest are all white families.
And with what little amount of money a person can get from Welfare (an amount which you can barely survive on, and amount that is far less than the average rent in the area I work in for a two bed room apartment), those 2 black families, 7 latin@ families and asian family every other day take that money and they are thankful for what little help they can get, they go live in shitty apartments or with other families in a cramped house so that they can afford to pay rent on the meager amount they get from us a month. They bust their asses to SURVIVE.
But those white people? They are upset with the money they get. They wonder why if they paid taxes their whole lives, that they can only get such a small amount of money? They say it must be all of the POC coming in and taking all of the welfare money and all of the illegal immigrants who come in and stole welfare aid (nevermind the fact that you CANNOT RECEIVE AID if you are not a US Citizen or a Permanent Resident of more than 10 years). They say if POC would just get jobs and get off welfare we’d have more money to give them (yet somehow turn around and say that POC are taking all of their jobs, so that’s why they can’t find one). They say this to the other white applicants in the lobby or the WOC workers who are trying to help them get back on their feet. Out fucking loud.
Wanna know what white privilege is?
White privilege is being able to have the balls to go to a welfare office, be surrounded by other white people who are also applying, and complaining about how POC are taking all of the governments money, meanwhile POC are working shitty jobs and living in shit neighborhoods refusing to get the aid they NEED to help their families, because they will be shamed the minute they step into the building.
Nearly everyone I know is on some sort of food assistance program whether that be the food bank or food stamps.
once again, i hate this system… but it sucks being the collateral of it falling apart.
Yup.
It’s been really interesting listening to politicians talk about folks in that age group - “youth” “young adults” - not having work ethics and wanting everything handed to them. And there’s so much bullshit out there about who these services are ‘really meant for’ that it indoctrinates people and some folks aren’t even at a place where they can acknowledge that they have a right to assistance - that they qualify for assistance. I recently had a friend tell me that she eats 1.5 meals a day during the week and relies on free snacks at work (like candy and cookies) to keep herself going so she can afford to pay rent and student loans. She kept saying that she didn’t want to get food stamps because she didn’t want to take from folks that were worse off than her. The language that we have to talk about government assistance is so fucked up. And unreal. Like, not based in reality. Not to mention - racist and classist.
I’ve known soooooo many ppl in this situation. Wow. And it really is hard not telling yourself, “I’m not that bad off. I don’t need it.” Damn…
the bolded sounds like me, and I’M ALREADY ON fukin food stamps.
I haven’t told anybody this but thats one of the reasons I’m moving back home. So that I can eat. And attempt to save money by not having to pay rent at my parents house. I barely eat a meal a day. And its been like this for as long as I can remember. Gas money, and bills are more important than my fucking health. Smh.
It’s rough out here, especially if you come from a disadvantaged background. So many obstacles your way. With gas being around $3.49 a gallon, eating healthy being more expensive than eating shitty, and more than likely having to commute, then yea, food stamps or government is probable; especially if you have to take care of other siblings, or if you had to become your parent’s parent.
what I just asked nerdtsquared.
You said start a conversation. I’m a bit conflicted about this. Its not eugenics, I think you know there are plenty of people in the black community who pop out babies. The chances of success will likely decrease with every birth. Should the government mandate tube tying after a 5th baby? Should people be required to do more to receive food stamps? How can social programs promote a healthier black family? Single mother homes or dysfunctional homes dont give the advantages other households have.
Interested in seeing her response. She is open to questions, discussions, and debate as I do. But she started 1st lol.
I asked this because I grew up a certain way and I’ve seen classmates get caught up in bullshit. Getting pregnant in your senior year of high school shouldn’t be a normal thing. [This post isn’t aimed at blaming women. It takes 2 to tango. for the feminists.]
Should [broke ass who you see on Maury with 10 children] men who father many kids be forced to get clipped?
CBS Evening News 11-3-2011
The new poor are among the subjects discussed.
The number of people living in neighborhoods of extreme poverty grew by a third over the past decade, according to a new report, erasing most of the gains from the 1990s when concentrated poverty declined.
More than 10 percent of America’s poor now live in such neighborhoods, up from 9.1 percent in the beginning of the decade, an addition of more than two million people, according to the report by the Brookings Institution, an independent research group.
Extreme poverty — defined as areas where at least 40 percent of the population lives below the federal poverty line, which in 2010 was $22,300 for a family of four — is still below its 1990 level, when 14 percent of poor people lived in such areas.
The report analyzed Census Bureau income data from 2000 to 2009, the most recent year for which there was comprehensive data.
The current political climate is horrific. With Dems in House and Senate, Obama had to twist arms and now the Obstructionist GOP is cockblocking harder than sexy girl’s fat friend. Obama can’t get political play with cockblocking that hard. Obama is either labeled as not trying fighting hard enough or giving up too much to the GOP. Quite a hard position to be in. 22 million children could do without the need for political points and cockblocking. Poverty statistically leads to more poverty, crime, hardships, bad nutrition, and worse life in general compared to middle and upper class kids.
